David W. Brumbaugh is a 1925 graduate of Salem High School in Salem, Virginia.  He continued his studies at Roanoke College in Salem, receiving in 1929 a B.S. degree in Business, followed by an M.B.A. degree at Harvard Business School in 1931.

Brumbaugh joined the publishing company of Time, Inc. in 1933 and has held executive posts in the organization as:  Comptroller, Assistant Secretary, Assistant Treasurer, and Personnel Officer.  In 1939 he was named Secretary of Time, Inc., a title he kept for twenty years.  In 1959 he was named Administrative Vice President and the following year Executive Vice President, Treasurer, and Director.

By 1968, David Brumbaugh, as Executive Vice President of the firm, had been directly involved in Time’s expansion into the fields of book and newspaper publishing.  Recognition of a magazine’s worth is reflected in its duration of publication;TIME is a feat in itself and to have been a driving force behind the continued relevance of this magazine is also a feat in itself--David has been just that.  TIME is published weekly, with an occasional Special Issue; its principal offices are in the Time & Life Building, Rockefeller Center, in New York City.  Its name and its red border are protected by trademark registration wherever TIME magazine is sold.

Dorothy Seay Brumbaugh is David’s wife; their children are:  David W., Jr. and Ann Seay.  Southern Pines, North Carolina, is now home to this publishing magnate.

David Brumbaugh has served as a Trustee of Roanoke College and for three years was Chairman of the College’s Annual Giving Fund.  In 1968, his alma mater bestowed upon him its highest honor--the Roanoke College Medal.  This medal represents the sense of responsible leadership, intellectual integrity, and good citizenship emphasized in his undergraduate years and reflected throughout his life.  Among other honors, he received the First Citizen award from the U.S. Postal Service for initiating development of the zip code.

In recognition of his outstanding career achievements, David W. Brumbaugh was among the charter members inducted into the Salem Alumni Hall of Fame established by the Salem Educational Foundation and Alumni Association in 1996.
