Carey W. Casey
Graduating from Andrew Lewis High School in 1974, Carey Casey was an aspiring student and a highly regarded athlete. He was vice president of the Senior Class, president of the Monogram Club, a member of the Student Council, and Homecoming King. Excelling in sports, he played varsity football, basketball, and track.
Carey entered Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in the fall of 1974 and majored in Physical Education. He transferred to the University of North Carolina on a football scholarship where he participated on the 1977 Atlantic Coast Conference championship team and in two post-season bowl games. He earned a B.A. degree in Religion in the spring of 1979. Upon receiving a Billy Graham Scholarship for Theological Studies, Casey attended Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and the Virginia Union University School of Theology.
Reverend Carey W. Casey’s career has been both eventful and varied. He has served as minister, public speaker, and lecturer. He was the first ever National Urban Director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was Chaplain for the Dallas Cowboys from 1983-88. In Seoul, Korea, in 1988, he was Chaplain at the Summer Olympic Games and lecturer at the World Congress on Sports. Additionally, he has served on the Executive Committee of the National Board of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes from 1992 to the present, lectured in Switzerland in 1994, and has served as guest lecturer at various Seminaries, Universities, Colleges, and professional sports pre-game Chapel Services.
Carey is the former pastor of Lawndale Community Church in N. Lawndale (Chicago) which is the 15th poorest community in America. The church is one of former President George Bush’s “Points of Light.” Carey’s mission was to empower the community with health care, housing, education, and economic growth. Carey recently accepted and assumed the position of Senior Vice President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Kansas City, Missouri.
Considered an authority on the subjects of religion, civil rights history, and racial reconciliation, he serves on numerous boards and associations, both nationally and internationally. His many honors include: listed as Outstanding Young Man of America 1980-83; featured in a number of publications such as Ebony, Christianity Today, and Leadership; recipient of the Dallas NAACP Juanita Craft Award; “Alumni of the Year” at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in 1991; recipient of Dollar and Sense magazine award in 1991; and listing in Who’s Who in Black America, 1991-97.
Carey and his wife, Melanie Little Casey, reside in Kansas City, Missouri, and have four children Christie, Patrice, Marcellus, and Chance.
In recognition of his outstanding career achievements, the Reverend Carey Walden Casey was among those inducted in 1997 into the Salem Alumni Hall of Fame established by the Salem Educational Foundation and Alumni Association.
