George W. McFarland
Charles W. McFarland graduated Andrew Lewis High School in Salem, Virginia, in 1960. An excellent student, he was a member of the Latin Club, Beta Club, Bi-Phy-Chem Science Club, and, in his senior year, served as President of the Astronomy Club. The Senior Mirror honored his as “Most Intellectual.”
Chuck attended Oberlin College and earned an A.B. degree in Chemistry in 1964. This was followed by postgraduate studies at New Mexico State University during the period if 1964 through 1966. Then in 1971, he received a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at Case Western Reserve University. At Case, he conducted research under supervision of George Olah, 1994 winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Postdoctoral research appointments were pursued at the Cuyahoga County, Ohio, Coroner’s Office and Case Western Reserve University during the period of 1971-1973.
Dr. McFarland’s professional career began in 1973 as a Research Chemist with McGean-Rohco, Inc., (formerly Rohco, Inc., and R.O. Hull & Co.); a manufacturer of metal finishing chemicals in Cleveland, Ohio. Through the period of 1975 through 1977, he was given the added responsibility of Research Manager, and from 1977 to the present, has held the position of Technical Assistant to the Research Director.
With his education, experience, and interest centered primarily on analytical, organic, and theoretical chemistry; electrochemistry; information retrieval; and computer applications: Dr. McFarland not only holds important patents related to his chosen field, but has also authored and co-authored a number of publications related to electroplating cells, electroplating baths, organophosphorus compounds, photoelectron and magnetic resonance spectra, and other computational chemistry techniques.
Dr. McFarland holds memberships in the American Chemical Society, New York Academy of Sciences, American Institute of Chemists (Fellow), American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Electroplaters and Surface Finishers Society. His awards and honors include: Sigma Xi, NASA Traineeship, Who’s Who in Technology Today, NIH Predoctoral Research Fellowship, and Winner in Super Challenge Ohio contest for Cray supercomputer time.
Chuck’s leisure time activities have resulted in 15,000 miles of running including 15 marathons. He has also enjoyed mountaineering in Mexico, Switzerland, and the United States; having reached an elevation of 18,700 feet.
