Richard P. Morgan
Richard Penn Morgan graduated from Salem High School in 1985, where he was on the McDonald’s All-American State and Regional District First Teams. After graduating from Salem High, Richard continued to play basketball and pursued a B.S. degree in Sports Management at the University of Virginia. He was a member of 3 NCAA Tournament Teams between 1986-1989, making it to the Final 8 and on the First Team All-ACC in 1989. That same year, he led the ACC in his free throw percentage, breaking the previous NCAA Tournament record for the most consecutive free throws, and scoring 39 points against the University of North Carolina. Richard remains a top University of Virginia career leader in free throws, steals, and total points.
From 1990 to 1992, Richard played for the Continental Basketball Association, the Austrian, Honduran, and Philippine leagues, and in All-Star competitions in Europe and the Middle East. He then worked as a scout, recruiting basketball and football players for the Kingsley Group in Chicago, before returning to Salem as a teacher’s aid for special education students. Since 1992, he has coached, starting out at Salem High and Andrew Lewis as Assistant and then J.V. Head Coach, and leading his respective teams to win the District Championship from 1993-1996 and the Regional and State Championships in 1993. For seven years, he was Assistant Coach at Hampton University, James Madison University, and East Carolina University. Since 2003, he has been Associate Head Coach at Hampton. His team won the 2006 MEAC Championship and earned an NCAA appearance.
Richard has also served as Assistant Director for Camp Speed and as Assistant Coach for Houston Fancher Basketball Camp and Darcie Vincent Basketball Camp in Boone, North Carolina. As a young man, he sang in the choir and ushered at Salem’s Shiloh Baptist Church. Richard has continued to usher and contribute to fundraisers and events at Cornerstone Summit Church in Boone.
Richard and his wife, Sherelle, have two children, Nicholas and Kaleb.
In recognition of his outstanding career achievements, Richard P. Morgan is inducted into the 2008 Salem Alumni Hall of Fame established by the Salem Educational Foundation and Alumni Association.
