Charles F. Rowell, Jr.
Charles F. Rowell, Jr., graduated from Andrew Lewis high School in 1967. He was a member of the Latin club, Vice President and President of the Interact Club, spokesman for the newspaper circulation staff, and tri-chairman for the Prom Committee. He was president of the high school band for two years and chaired 1st trumpet. He also ran track for two years. The Senior Mirror listed Chuck as “Most Talented.” While at Andrew Lewis, he joined in forming a local band that was quite popular. The band provided music for a variety of functions including wedding receptions and performed at area churches.
Chuck entered Virginia Tech in the fall of 1967 and became a member of the Virginia Tech Ranger Company of the Corps of Cadets. He was also a member of the Highty-Tighties Regimental Band and the German Club. Chuck earned a B.S. degree in Business Management at Virginia Tech in 1971. He continued his education at American College and earned an M.S. degree in Financial Services in 1990.
After graduating from Virginia Tech, Chuck continued to play music with a local band as well as becoming a member of the Kazim Temple Shrine Band in Roanoke. In addition, he played in the First Baptist Church of Roanoke orchestra providing music for the Christmas and spring programs.
In 1973, Chuck joined New York Life as Field Underwriter in Roanoke Virginia. In 1978, he was appointed Sales Manager for that office and in 1983, named Associate General Manager. In 1985, he was appointed General Manager of the Charleston, West Virginia General Office. Four years later, he returned to Roanoke as General Manager. In 1991, he was appointed General Manager of the Chicago O’Hare General Office, and in 1995, was named Assistant to the Senior Vice President of North Central Agencies in Chicago. The following year, Chuck was appointed Managing Partner of the Pittsburgh-Johnstown General Office, a position he holds today.
Chuck became a Certified Life Underwriter (CLU) in 1978, a Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) in 1983, a Master of Sciences and Financial Services (MSFS) in 1990, and a Charter Leadership Fellow (CLF) in 2002. He is a past president (1982) of the Roanoke Valley Association of Life Underwriters. Currently he serves as Treasure and Board Member of General Agent and Management Association (GAMA), and Vice President of New York Life Agents Reinsurance Company (NYLARC.) He is past Chairman of New York Life Managing Partner’s Advisory Council (MPAC), past Chairman of Curriculum and Credential’s Committee of the Agency Management Training Council (AMTC), and past President of Greater Chicago GAMA. He is now a member of the Pittsburgh Estate Planning Council, member of Pittsburgh CLU and ChFC Chapters, and member of the Pittsburgh Association of Life Underwriters.
Chuck’s awards include being named a member of the Million Dollar Round Table from 1976-78, receiving the National Management Award – Gold from 1996-2000, recipient of GAMA Master Agency Award for four years, and five times named to the New York Life Manager’s Round Table.
In his youth, church was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1964. He served as District Chairman of the Big Lick District of Boy Scouts in Roanoke from 1976-78. Recently, Chuck joined others from his church in spending a week in Germany as a volunteer from some 8,000 German ministers in the city of Oberhausen. He now lives in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Brenda. They have two daughters, Karen and Kristin, and a granddaughter, Lura.
In recognition of his outstanding career achievements, Charles F. Rowell, Jr., is inducted into the 2003 Salem Alumni Hall of Fame established by the Salem Educational Foundation and Alumni Association.
