Joseph D. Stoutamire

 

Joseph D. Stoutamire graduated from Andrew Lewis High School in 1950.  He was president of his freshman and sophomore classes, president of student government his senior year, and a delegate to, and ultimately chairman of, the Roanoke District of the Student Cooperative Association.  Joseph was editor of Tattler, manager of the football team, and a member of the Projection and Key Clubs. He performed in the Annual Follies and was featured in the Senior Mirror. 

After graduating from Andrew Lewis, Joseph studied architecture at Virginia Tech.  He then served for two years as a corporal in the U.S. Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and was honorably discharged upon completion of his service.

Joseph worked for six years for the Smithey & Boynton and Wells & Meagher architecture firms before receiving his license in 1962.  Since then, he has been a partner at Jarvis & Stoutamire and a principal at Scott, Scott & Stoutamire, and he has practiced at his own firm.  Between 1999 and 2005, Joseph worked for Hughes Associates Architects, and since 2006, he has been affiliated with Kinsey Shane and Associates.  Over the course of his career, Joseph has provided all phases of architectural services to private, institutional, government, and military clients, including the U.S. Navy and Army Corps of Engineers.  His projects include single and multi-family residences, public housing, religious architecture, supermarkets and shopping centers, offices, and industrial facilities.

Joseph served for fifteen years as a member on the Building Code Board of Appeals for the City of Salem, and as Chairman for nine of those years.  He was appointed by the Governor as a charter member of the Board of the Department of Housing and Community Development for the Commonwealth of Virginia Codes and Standards Committee; he served for two terms on the board, and as Chairman for two of those years.  Joseph is also affiliated with the Blue Ridge Chapter and the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects. 

From 1993-1994, Joseph was President of the Salem Rotary Club, which has recognized him for his service with the Paul Harris Fellow Award.  He has contributed to the Salem Y.M.C.A., Roanoke College, Virginia Tech, and to many charitable organizations.  Joseph is an active member of the Salem Historical Society and of College Lutheran Church, where the Stoutamire Chapel was named in his honor.

Joseph and his wife, Cecelia, live in Salem.  They have four children, Dan Stoutamire, Eva Joyce, Andrea Hutchinson, and Paul Stoutamire.

In recognition of his outstanding career achievements, Joseph D. Stoutamire is inducted into the 2008 Salem Alumni Hall of Fame established by the Salem Educational Foundation and Alumni Association.
