Best Lawyers in America for the past seven years has listed, in the area of Labor Laws, Daryl Eugene Webb, Jr., a 1966 honors graduate of Andrew Lewis High School in Salem, Virginia.  With a straight “A” average throughout high school and the yearbook’s Senior Mirror naming him “Most Likely to Succeed,” seems to be a good part of his life.  Not only scholarships, but sports and extra-curricular activities plied at Andrew Lewis have carried over into his adult life.  The University of Virginia recognized these attributes in giving Webb its Honor Award which carried at the time a $1000 stipend, renewable for four years, continued upon all-round achievement and leadership at the campus.  Not only did Gene complete his B.A. degree there (1970) but five years thereafter earned a J.D. degree there; the same year he joined the law firm of Mays & Valentine in Richmond, Virginia.

While in high school, he was “Gene” to his friends who elected him Class President, Representative to the Student Council for two years; and Homeroom President.  He also was chosen to hold positions in the Key Club, Latin Club, and Monogram Club.  His junior year, Gene quarterbacked the Varsity Wolverines to a 10-0 football season and to a Group I-A State Football Championship.  He also participated with distinction on the basketball, track, and golf teams, and served as Mayor for a Day on the Salem Town Council.  Additionally, Webb served as Vice President of the A.L. Beta Club and President of the State Beta Club.

Katherine and Gene have two children:  Tatem and Spencer.  The Webbs live in Richmond where he has served on the Committee on Human Relations six years; Board of Directors for:  Richmond Ballet, Teams for Progress, West Richmond Little League, and has been a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Before entering the study of law, Webb served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army (1970-72).  While at the University of Virginia he was tapped for membership in Omicron Delta Kappa.

When Gene joined Mays & Valentine in 1975, it was a firm of 30 lawyers in one office at Richmond.  In twenty years it has grown to 130 lawyers in offices at Alexandria, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Richmond--currently, the third largest law firm in Virginia.  In 1982, he was named a full partner and since 1991 has served on the firm’s Executive Committee.

Gene is Chairman of his Firm’s Labor and Employment Law Practice Group and  has served on the Executive Council of the Virginia Bar Association Section on Labor and Employment Group.  He regularly speaks before groups on aspects of labor and employment law.

In recognition of his outstanding career achievements, Daryl Eugene Webb, Jr. was among the charter members inducted into the Salem Alumni Hall of Fame established by the Salem Educational Foundation and Alumni Association in 1996.
