ANNIE COOK ALDRIDGE ENDOWMENT (LATIN) 1989 This endowment was established in 1989 by an anonymous and appreciative five-year Latin student from Andrew Lewis High School. In addition to being an outstanding teacher, Mrs. Aldridge was a charter member of the Board of Directors of the Salem Educational Foundation and Alumni Association. She died in 1997, and through her estate she willed $69,454.87 to the Salem Educational Foundation and Alumni Association. An award is given each year, preferably to a student who plans to enter the field of the Classics. recipients \| back to top
ANDREW LEWIS CLASS OF ’52 ENDOWMENT 2006 This scholarship was established in November 2002 by the Andrew Lewis High School Class of ’52. Contributions were made by G. Thomas Fields in memory of Anna Martin Fields, by William R. Young, Jr., by G. Marshall Mundy, and other class members. GENERAL ANDREW LEWIS ENDOWMENT 2003 This endowment was established in 2002 by contributors to the Andrew Lewis Statue and other interested persons. A scholarship will be given to a Salem High School graduate who plans to major in history or social studies or who is a descendant of military personnel. recipients \| back to top
ARCHER FAMILY ENDOWMENT 2006 This endowment was started in May 2004 in memory of her late husband James Milton Archer by Regine Archer. James and Regine moved to Salem in 1959. Five of their six children, Nancy, Robert, James, Paul, and Evelyn graduated from Andrew Lewis High School. The youngest, Jackie, graduated from Salem High School. Awards from this endowment will be made to deserving graduates of Salem High School who plan to attend a four-year college or university and who have been outstanding academic students. recipients \| back to top
BRAXTON FAMILY LEGACY ENDOWMENT 2005 This endowment was established in 2002 by Dr. Richard H. Fisher, the Braxton Family, and friends, to honor the contributions of the Rev. Dr. James and Mrs. Louise Braxton and their family to the religious, educational, and civic welfare of the city of Salem. Dr. and Mrs. Braxton came to Salem in 1969 when Dr. Braxton was appointed Pastor of First Baptist Church in Salem. Mrs. Braxton became a teacher in the City of Salem School Division. Together, they reared four children: Zenobia Simone, James Allison, Jr., Chanda Linnet, and Brad Ronnell. Annually, this endowment will provide a scholarship to a deserving graduate of Salem High School who will pursue a college degree or advanced vocational or technical training in the following academic year. RUTH CALLAWAY JONES BROCK MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT 2008 This endowment was established in 2006 to recognize Ruth’s lifetime devotion to helping others. Mrs. Brock was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson College for Women, a charter member of The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and a lifetime member of the Turner Ashby Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Scholarships from this endowment will be made to deserving Salem High School graduates who plan to become teachers. This endowment was established by Stephen Franklin Brock, a graduate of Andrew Lewis High School in 1964 and of Virginia Commonwealth University in 1974 and Archibald Moffett (Archie) Brock, a graduate of Andrew Lewis High School in 1962 and Virginia Polytechnic Institute. WILLIAM O. BRUBECK ENDOWMENT (TEACHER) 2004 This scholarship was established in memory of William Brubeck by his family and by West Salem Elementary School teachers. Mr. Brubeck was a long time principal at West Salem Elementary and remained its principal when the City of Salem formed its own school system. LAUREN ELIZABETH BURNS ENDOWMENT 2006 This endowment was established in 2006 by the Salem Band Boosters. GLENNA AND JACK BURRESS ENDOWMENT 1999 The Glenna and Jack Burress Memorial Endowment was established by their children Nancy Pinkard, Susan Wall, Daniel Burress, and John W. Burress III. Glenna and Jack Burress were long-time leaders and philanthropists in Salem. RUTH AND RAY BUSSARD ENDOWMENT (BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE) 1998 This endowment was established in 1994 by Don Russo, Esquire and other friends of Ruth and Ray Bussard. Further support was provided by Ray Bussard, Carl Tarpley, Jr., Staley Hester, and American Legion Salem Post 19. LAURITZ CHRISTENSEN BAND ENDOWMENT 1986 This endowment was established by Rowena Holiday Boehling, other members of the family, and the Andrew Lewis High School Band. Mr. Powell Black also donated to this endowment. American Legion Salem Post 19 completed the endowment in 1997. TOM DOOLEY ENDOWMENT 2007 This endowment was funded by R. T. Dooley, Jr. in August 2004. He graduated from Andrew Lewis High School in 1952, earned a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from V.M.I. in 1956, and an M.S. degree in Structural Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1957. Throughout his life he has been an inspiration to youth. True to the Matthew 25 example, awards from this endowment will be made to deserving students who have used their talents to increase their ability to make a difference in the lives of others. recipients \| back to top
DR. KEITH EDMUNDS MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT 2007 This endowment was established by Dr. Richard H. Fisher and Edmunds family members. Keith graduated from Andrew Lewis High School in 1945 where he lettered in basketball and football. He built on the secure educational foundation which his hometown schools had provided for him and graduated from Randolph Macon College and The Medical College of Virginia. He practiced medicine in Salem at the Lewis-Gale Clinic until his death in 2005. In 1988, the Merchants Association of Roanoke Valley, Inc. named Keith “Father of the Year” in the field of Family Life. He was also named “Family Physician of the Year” in 2003 by the Blue Ridge Academy of Family Physicians. ANN MICHELE (MICKEY) FAVILLE ENDOWMENT 2007 This endowment was established by the staff at G. W. Carver Elementary School after Mickey’s untimely death on March 8, 2000. Family and friends also made contributions to the Endowment. Recipients of this award must plan to attend a four-year college or university in Virginia. ANNE KATHERINE FLETCHER FISHER ENDOWMET 2001 Anne Katherine Fletcher was born in Richmond, Virginia and moved to the Roanoke Valley in 1964. She and her husband Richard raised six children and now have 12 grandchildren, all of whom reside in Salem. Anne Katherine helped her husband extensively throughout the 17 years he was president of the Salem Educational Foundation and Alumni Association and was pleased to know that an endowment would be established in her name through insurance. Scholarships from this endowment will be made to deserving Salem High School graduates who attend Westhampton College at the University of Richmond or Liberty University in Lynchburg. recipients \| back to top
DR. CHARLES H. FISHER ENDOWMENT (CHEMISTRY) 2001 This endowment was established in 1993 by Dr. Charles H. Fisher, a member of the Salem High School class of 1924. A scholarship will be awarded each year to a student who plans to major in chemistry and attend the University of Illinois, Roanoke College, or Tulane University. recipients \| back to top
RICHARD H. FISHER ENDOWMENT (MEDICAL) 1986 In honor of Dr. Richard H. Fisher, the City of Salem School Board members established this endowment in 1986 by donating their monthly stipends. FOSTER FAMILY SCOUTING FUND ENDOWMENT 2005 This Fund was started by the Foster Family in March 2005 to support Scouting. The recipient of this award must be a currently registered Boy Scout who has attained the rank of Eagle Scout, or a currently registered Girl Scout who has attained the Gold Award. The recipient must also be a deserving Salem High School student who plans to attend a four-year college or university. Preference will be given to alternating this award between Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. recipients \| back to top
GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ENDOWMENT 1998 This endowment was established in 1988 by gifts from the G. W. Carver Reunion Association. Additional donations were made by friends; and in 1997, American Legion Salem Post 19 completed the endowment. DEEDE GRACE ENDOWMENT (NURSING) 1986 This endowment was established as a memorial to Deede Grace, a 1984 graduate of Salem High School, who had completed one year of pre-nursing at VPI&SU when she was tragically killed in an automobile accident. She planned to pursue a nursing career at the University of Virginia. Her family and friends established a memorial fund in order to award a scholarship to a Salem High School graduate who plans to enter a school of nursing. recipients \| back to top

CHARLIE HAMMERSLEY ENDOWMENT 2010 This endowment was established in 2006 to honor Charles Hammersley, Sr. for his contributions to the City of Salem. The Andrew Lewis High School graduate started working for the Salem Parks and Recreation in the mid 70's and retired in 2006 as Director. This endowment will provide a scholarship to a deserving graduate of Salem High School who will pursue a college degree and major in recreation or an athlete who will continue playing sports in college. recipients \| back to top
MARGARET ANN HANKINS/ANN JACQUELINE THOMASON ENDOWMENT 2007 This endowment was established in 2006 to recognize the dedicated service of Margaret Ann Hankins to Virginia Commonwealth University and community and the dedicated service of Ann Jacqueline Thomason to the Salem and Roanoke County School Divisions and community. Miss Hankins graduated from Mary Baldwin College. Miss Thomason is a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute. CHAUNCEY AND LUCY HARMON ENDOWMENT (EDUCATIONAL) 2001 This endowment was established in memory of Chauncey Harmon who was principal of G. W. Carver High School in Salem and was an outstanding educator in the school system. The endowment is also in honor of his wife Lucy Harmon who was an elementary school teacher for many years in Salem. HERITAGE ENDOWMENT 2008 This endowment was established in 2007 by combining the “Class of ’63 Fund,” the “R. Elwood Owen Endowment,” and the “Steve Labassi Memorial Endowment.” Steve Labassi was a teacher at Salem High School before his untimely death from cancer. He was a graduate of The College of William and Mary and an outstanding college football player. BOB JOHNSON MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT 2007 This endowment was established in 2006 and named for Robert M. Johnson II. At the time of his death in 2005, Bob had been serving as PTSA President at Salem High School and was heavily involved in youth lacrosse at the elementary and middle school levels. He also was coach of the JV lacrosse team at Salem High School. Awards will be made to deserving students who have participated in lacrosse. DAVE LAMANCA ENGINEERING ENDOWMENT 2007 This endowment was established in 2007 by the family of Dave Lamanca. Dave was a victim of the crash of USAir Flight 427 near Pittsburgh on September 8, 1994. He was a native of Salem, educated in the Salem school system, and earned a degree from the School of Engineering at the University of Virginia in 1989. The recipient of this four-year award must plan to pursue a career in engineering and attend a four-year Virginia college or university. recipients \| back to top
DAVE LAMANCA GOLF ENDOWMENT 1995 This memorial endowment was established in 1994 by the family of Dave Lamanca who was a 1985 graduate of Salem High School. Dave was a victim of the crash of USAir Flight 427 near Pittsburgh on September 8, 1994. He was a native of Salem, educated in the Salem school system, and was a member of the Salem High School State Championship Golf Team in 1983. He earned a degree in Computer Science from the School of Engineering at the University of Virginia in 1989. The recipient of this four-year award must attend a four-year Virginia college or university, be a well-rounded student, and actively participate in golf on a recreational or organized basis. recipients \| back to top

JUNE LONG ENDOWMENT (CHORAL MUSIC) 1986 This endowment was established in 1986 by Mrs. June Long who was a charter member of the Salem Educational Foundation and Alumni Association. She is also a former member and chairman of the City of Salem School Board and of the Salem Music Club. The first award was given in 1986. Mrs. McConkey had a long and illustrious teaching career from 1910 until 1956. JEANNE ANDREW PACE MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT (EDUCATION) 2006 This endowment was established in 2005 in memory of Jeanne Andrew Pace by her family and many friends. Mrs. Pace was a teacher for over 30 years at East Salem and Glenvar Elementary Schools. Her legacy lives on in the hundreds of students she was privileged to teach and in those future teachers who will benefit from this endowment. SALEM POST 19 AMERICAN LEGION ENDOWMENT 1997 Through the efforts of Mac Green and Bob Craighead, this endowment was established by Salem American Legion Post 19 in 1996. Two awards based on scholastic achievement and need are made each year. One boy and one girl, who are descendants of military personnel, will receive the awards. The Salem Post 19 also contributed to the Eddie Joyce, Ruth and Ray Bussard, George Washington Carver, Lauren Christiansen, and Chauncey and Lucy Harmon endowments. recipients \| back to top

SALEM SCHOOL BOARD AWARD (OUTSTANDING TEACHER) 1996 This endowment was established in 1994 by Dr. Walter A. Franke, a member of the City of Salem School Board, to recognize outstanding teachers. The first teacher was recognized in 1996. The recipient of this award will be selected by the City of Salem School System. Scholarships from this endowment will be given to deserving students who plan to attend a four-year college or university. HENRY TIEN SCHOLARSHIP 1997 This scholarship was established in 1997 by the Tien family, Mrs. Betsy McClearn, and other friends of Henry Tien. Henry graduated from Salem High School in 1993 and attended Stanford University. In his senior year at Stanford University, Henry tragically lost his life in a mountain climbing accident. Henry was not only a brilliant student but also a very caring individual. BENTLEY WYSOR WEST ENDOWMENT (HOLLINS UNIVERSITY) 1998 This endowment was established in 1997 by Francis West, a 1937 graduate of Andrew Lewis High School, to honor his mother who graduated from Hollins College. Mrs. West served on the Roanoke County School Board during the tenure of Superintendent of Schools Roland E. Cook and was the first female school board member in the State of Virginia. COACH WILLIS WHITE ENDOWMENT (MATH OR FOOTBALL) 2004 This endowment was established in March 2003 by the Salem Educational Foundation & Alumni Association and by co-workers and friends of Willis White. When the City of Salem established its own school division in 1983, Willis was chosen as the head football coach at Salem High School and served in that capacity for 21 years before retiring in June 2004. At Salem High School, his football teams had a record of 201-50-3. His teams won four VHSL championships and numerous district and regional titles. Willis was elected to the Virginia High School Hall of Fame in 2001. He also was named teacher of the year because of his outstanding accomplishments as a mathematics teacher. ANNIE COOK ALDRIDGE ENDOWMENT (LATIN) 1989 This endowment was established in 1989 by an anonymous and appreciative five-year Latin student from Andrew Lewis High School. In addition to being an outstanding teacher, Mrs. Aldridge was a charter member of the Board of Directors of the Salem Educational Foundation and Alumni Association. She died in 1997, and through her estate she willed $69,454.87 to the Salem Educational Foundation and Alumni Association. BRAXTON FAMILY LEGACY ENDOWMENT 2005 This endowment was established in 2002 by Dr. Richard H. Fisher, the Braxton Family, and friends, to honor the contributions of the Rev. Dr. James and Mrs. Louise Braxton and their family to the religious, educational, and civic welfare of the city of Salem. Dr. and Mrs. Braxton came to Salem in 1969 when Dr. Braxton was appointed Pastor of First Baptist Church in Salem. Mrs. Braxton became a teacher in the City of Salem School Division. Together, they reared four children: Zenobia Simone, James Allison, Jr., Chanda Linnet, and Brad Ronnell. Annually, this endowment will provide a scholarship to a deserving graduate of Salem High School who will pursue a college degree or advanced vocational or technical training in the following academic year. Throughout his life he has been an inspiration to youth. DR. KEITH EDMUNDS MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT 2007 This endowment was established by Dr. Richard H. Fisher and Edmunds family members. Keith graduated from Andrew Lewis High School in 1945 where he lettered in basketball and football. He built on the secure educational foundation which his hometown schools had provided for him and graduated from Randolph Macon College and The Medical College of Virginia. He practiced medicine in Salem at the Lewis-Gale Clinic until his death in 2005. In 1988, the Merchants Association of Roanoke Valley, Inc. named Keith “Father of the Year” in the field of Family Life. He was also named “Family Physician of the Year” in 2003 by the Blue Ridge Academy of Family Physicians. ANNE KATHERINE FLETCHER FISHER ENDOWMET 2001 Anne Katherine Fletcher was born in Richmond, Virginia and moved to the Roanoke Valley in 1964. She and her husband Richard raised six children and now have 12 grandchildren, all of whom reside in Salem. Anne Katherine helped her husband extensively throughout the 17 years he was president of the Salem Educational Foundation and Alumni Association and was pleased to know that an endowment would be established in her name through insurance. At the time of his death in 2005, Bob had been serving as PTSA President at Salem High School and was heavily involved in youth lacrosse at the elementary and middle school levels. Mrs. Pace was a teacher for over 30 years at East Salem and Glenvar Elementary Schools. SALEM POST 19 AMERICAN LEGION ENDOWMENT 1997 Through the efforts of Mac Green and Bob Craighead, this endowment was established by Salem American Legion Post 19 in 1996. Two awards based on scholastic achievement and need are made each year. One boy and one girl, who are descendants of military personnel, will receive the awards. BRIAN H. THORNHILL ENDOWMENT 1993 This endowment was established in 1993 in memory of Brian H. Thornhill by his parents and grandparents. Brian graduated from Salem High School in 1992 and finished one year at Roanoke College before tragically succumbing to acute leukemia. HENRY TIEN SCHOLARSHIP 1997 This scholarship was established in 1997 by the Tien family, Mrs. Betsy McClearn, and other friends of Henry Tien. Henry graduated from Salem High School in 1993 and attended Stanford University. In his senior year at Stanford University, Henry tragically lost his life in a mountain climbing accident. Henry was not only a brilliant student but also a very caring individual. TRIPP ENDOWMENT 2007 This endowment was established in November 2006 by the City of Salem School Board in honor of Dr. Tripp who was superintendent of City of Salem Schools for 17 years. BENTLEY WYSOR WEST ENDOWMENT (HOLLINS UNIVERSITY) 1998 This endowment was established in 1997 by Francis West, a 1937 graduate of Andrew Lewis High School, to honor his mother who graduated from Hollins College. Mrs. West served on the Roanoke County School Board during the tenure of Superintendent of Schools Roland E. Cook and was the first female school board member in the State of Virginia. COACH WILLIS WHITE ENDOWMENT (MATH OR FOOTBALL) 2004 This endowment was established in March 2003 by the Salem Educational Foundation & Alumni Association and by co-workers and friends of Willis White. When the City of Salem established its own school division in 1983, Willis was chosen as the head football coach at Salem High School and served in that capacity for 21 years before retiring in June 2004. At Salem High School, his football teams had a record of 201-50-3. His teams won four VHSL championships and numerous district and regional titles. Willis was elected to the Virginia High School Hall of Fame in 2001. He also was named teacher of the year because of his outstanding accomplishments as a mathematics teacher.
